Inviting Mentors

Hello !fname,

Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat their produce.
Jeremiah 29:5, ESV

Flourish where you are now. This seems to be Jeremiah’s message to the Israelites in their season of exile. And it seems they were going to live in captivity in Babylon for a long time because Jeremiah encouraged them to build houses and plant gardens.

Building houses and planting gardens are things we do when we know we are going to be living in a place for a while. We build homes to have a physical place to create lifelong memories with our loved ones, to provide a safe sanctuary and to create a space of rest and rejuvenation for all who enter. We also plant gardens, year after year, anticipating the enjoyment of fresh, flavorful fruits and vegetables.

Yet, like the Israelites, we experience stretches of time that feel like an exile. Our circumstances hold us captive and we have a longing for the season to end. It’s not a place we want to settle into, grow a garden and stay for a while. Some of us are going through divorce, loneliness, caring for aging parents, a cancer diagnosis, unemployment or financial difficulties. But what if God wants us to have the same mindset in our difficult places that he wanted from Israel? To settle in and make life where we are. If so, then whatever place you are in currently, what specific steps can you take to flourish there?

For example, if you’re in the hospital for a long stay, get to know your medical team. Ask them questions and pray for them. If you’re taking care of an elderly parent, bring fresh flowers, eat ice cream and look through family albums together. If you’re lonely, consider starting a Bible study or hosting a game night with neighbors. As a mentor mom, you can plant seeds of joy, peace, encouragement and wisdom in the younger women you meet through MOPS. The ideas are endless. Take a few minutes to make a list of ways you can “build a home and plant a garden” wherever you find yourself at this very moment.

If this feels too difficult now, perhaps ask a friend, your pastor or a professional counselor to help you find ways to grow and thrive even in your season of hardship. In all seasons, remember God is with you in everything. And as he promised the Israelites, he has plans to give you a future and a hope too.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 29:11, ESV
