Many moms tell me they enjoyed reading until they had children. Then they had no undistracted time, or if they did, other interests clamored for it.
With me it was the opposite. I never read much, outside of class assignments, until motherhood brought mysteries and the realization of my own incompetence.
I devoured the "how to" magazine articles and books. But as I caught my stride (with the third son, perhaps), I settled into a preference for story - whether true or fictitious. How did other women compose their lives, I wondered? What meanings was I missing, in my wonderful but intensely in-drawn daily world, that would enrich the whole of who I am and what I could in turn pass on? When can a mom find time to read?
- During short, scheduled "coffee breaks" during the day
- In the car, waiting to pick up the carpoolers
- While waiting for something to finish cooking
- At the park, yard, or other outdoor area where your children play (exercising good peripheral vision)
- While feeding an infant
- At the library during story hour
- At bedtime
And finally, my favorite time and place for moms to read…
- When she is "up in the night"
