What do we want our children to know about God? I'm Elisa Morgan with some basic ways to start Building Your Child's Spiritual Formation, next on MOMSense.
In her book, Loving and Letting Go, Carol Kuykendall tells us that the answer is foundational to our children's spiritual growth. She suggests starting with the “always” truths about God.
“God is always with us. God is always loving. Always forgiving. Always in control. Always wanting what is best for us. Always wanting us to love Him.
“Here are some simple ways to pass on these 'always' truths.
* Read Bible stories to them. Give them their own copy of a children's Bible and recite verses to them.
* Take them to Sunday school. Ask them afterwards what they learned.
* Say prayers with them at night while tucking them into bed.
* Get them a non-breakable Christmas nativity set and let them play with it all year around.
* Talk about Jesus. Sing songs about him while driving in the car. Seal his love in their hearts with these words: 'Jesus loves me, this I know. For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to him belong. They are weak but he is strong.'”
And guess what, mom? While you are singing that “always” truth into their hearts, you are sealing it into your own heart as well. It's a profound truth that will ground your children in the reality of God's love, and remind you of the same promise.
