Goodbye Modern Technology

"Goodbye modern technology," my 10-year-old son said as he shut down his portable DVD. My husband and I were about to introduce him to our once-favorite pastime: backpacking in the mountains.

Eleven years have gone by since we’ve packed in anywhere. Miles away from TV, Wii, smart phones and computers, as well as the creature comforts: hot showers, comfy beds and indoor plumbing.

We chose an easier trail for his backpacking initiation and hoped he’d like this outdoor adventure. It didn't take long to hear his opinion. Following a terrific day of fishing at an alpine lake he asked, "Can we come back here next year too? I love it here!"

But I loved that this backcountry experience showed me how much motherhood and MOPS have changed me for the better. On previous backpacks, I was concerned about keeping up with everyone in the group. This time I hiked at a pace that was comfortable for me. Before, I would not have wanted any help stepping over a slippery rock. This trip I did. And I wouldn’t have stopped often enough to stay hydrated on earlier trips. This time I guzzled water regularly.

We had some great family face time, but it was nice to return to civilization. “Hello modern technology," my son said as he popped in a movie on the drive home. And we all couldn't wait to take a hot shower.
