Summer Friends

My son has a number of what he calls his "summer friends" — kids he see during the summer months at tennis lessons or in his other classes and activities. But these summer friends are not in his life during the other nine months of the year.

I'm surprised at some of the perplexing things these kids have talked openly about this summer with my 9-year-old. For instance, Decklin said he has absolutely zero friends in his life and that his entire family hates him. Or Conner who said that he doesn't have any friends either and his parents hate him. Or Brandon who asked several kids (including my son) if any of them believed in God. When they all said, “Yes,” he acted disappointed and said he guessed he was the only atheist in the group.

Heavy conversations for school age kids, don't you agree? My son felt bad for these boys. I told him that God puts people in our path for reasons we don’t always understand because our ways are not his ways. But we can pray for these people and show them God’s love. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways," declares the LORD. Isaiah 55:8.
