| Funny Things Kids Say: Paying Attention to Third-Grade Homework
by Karen Parks
My 9-year-old son was working on his weekly vocabulary list as I cooked dinner one night. He was sitting at the dining room table, within sight and hearing … and just out of arm’s reach. With each sentence he wrote, he grew more confident about his homework.
He read out another word to me — succulent. Then he read the sentence he’d written. “My mother is succulent.”
Wait, what was that? “No, hon. I don’t think that’s right.”
He protested, “Yes it is! I know it’s right!”
“OK,” I answered, still convinced that he needed to think about it some more. “Read the definition to me.”
His small voice rang through the whole house, “My mom is succulent. Succulent – fleshy and retains water!”
I’m done!
