Thankful
Six months ago my mother, who is a widow living alone, fell in her bedroom and broke her femur. Five months ago she developed severe gall bladder disease while at the rehab center. She spent 30 days in the hospital on a temporary nutrition tube gaining strength and then had her gall bladder removed. Three months ago, she fell at the rehab center and broke her femur again — one week before she was scheduled to be released. Three weeks ago, she came home!

I was her advocate and caretaker during this uncertain and emotional journey. And my 9-year-old son and husband walked every step of the way with me. This Thanksgiving, I have a lot to be thankful for:

  • I’m thankful for my mom, who wanted to give up many times during her 25-week recovery away from home, but didn’t.
  • I’m thankful for my husband, who rearranged his schedule countless times and helped me skillfully deal with the crisis of the moment.
  • I’m thankful for my son, who was shuttled back and forth to friend’s and relative’s houses throughout the summer and never complained. And he faithfully visited Grandma, playing cards with her, pushing her wheel chair and giving her the spark to get better.
  • I’m thankful for the many friends who prayed and cared for me and my family when life was out-of-control.
  • And I’m thankful that God knows our needs each day and provides our daily bread.

Thanksgiving blessings,
