Rekindle Your Dreams
by Trish Porter, a High-Jumping Mom
Trish Porter was on the 1988 U.S. Olympic Team in the high jump. After taking 11 years off, she started competing again and is the world record holder for women age 40–44 years old. She’s won four World Masters Championships and nine U.S. Masters Championships.
Bzzz … bzzzz … bzzzz. I hated the sound of my alarm. I pulled the covers over my head and rested for ten more minutes. Didn’t I just go to bed? Aren’t the kids old enough to feed themselves? Shannon is almost one. I had good intentions of getting up early, but I seldom followed through.
Each day I reluctantly dragged myself out of bed. However, my whole attitude and routine changed once I committed to rekindling my dream — breaking the world record in the high jump for women age 40. Then I popped out of bed before 6 a.m. in anticipation of the day ahead.
Pursuing my dream has energized my life and benefitted both me and my family. But first I had to eliminate the excuses and make a plan to succeed. As a busy mom, it’s easy to create a mental list of reasons for not pursuing a passion, such as: my children are too young, no time or energy or I’m definitely too old. Click here for some practical steps that have helped me and may help you make your dream become a reality.
Pursuing your dream now will keep you from one day waking up and wondering, Who am I, and what am I doing with my life? God has made you for a purpose. While your investment in your family is really important, finding your passion and purpose will energize you.
