My favorite thing about being a mom is … the intimate relationship I have with my boys — it’s an honor for me to be the first woman they meet.
One of the hardest things about being a mom is … I came from a dysfunctional family, so it’s very hard for me to walk out of the darkness I was once in and parent my children with no shadow.
For dinner last night, we ate … green smoothies with cherries, strawberries and grapes. Am I giving you the impression that all Singaporeans eat like us? By no means — the way we eat is almost unheard of here.
A favorite memory from today … biking with the boys in the morning with one belted in front and one behind. After taking Iain to school, Eoin fell asleep on the ride back. His head swayed from side to side with his big helmet, and I had a hard time keeping my balance.
Grocery shopping can be an adventure … if I’m walking by myself (which is unusual), it takes me 15 minutes to get to the store. But it takes 30 minutes to walk with the kids because Iain’s legs are short. No strollers are allowed on the bus.
My dreams for my children … I want them to grow up to be God-fearing, compassionate, joyful people who look beyond their own needs. I want them to pursue their dreams and passions with courage.
How I live out my spiritual life … I try to apply what I’ve read in my morning quiet time and meditate on one single verse. Some days are so crazy I grab hold of whatever promises I can remember from the Bible!
Tidbits … Life in Singapore is hectic — people work long hours and even school children don’t go to bed until 10 or 11 P.M. Many young families have live-in help. Most people live in public housing apartments that are very small. Owning a car is really expensive, so we use the trains, buses, taxis or we walk. It’s very hot and humid so we stay indoors as much as we can during the day.
