“Quiet game, starting now,” shouted one of my carpool kids on the way to school. All three children twisted around in the back seat trying not to make a sound. And I enjoyed several moments of blissful silence. The game ended as each child blurted out a word and lost the contest.
“Miss Mary,” one of the kids announced, “You won the quiet game, you didn’t make a sound!” “I didn’t?” I said as I’m normally refereeing the back seat behavior. “What did I win?” “Nothing!!” they said in chorus.
The blur of the holidays so often dulls my senses about what’s important during this busy time of year. Too often my focus this season has been on getting everything done for Christmas, or the parking ticket I got yesterday or the H1N1 flu.
But I’m remembering to play the “quiet game” and take a few moments to marvel at the Christmas story events. Such as how an angel of the Lord appeared to a small band of unsuspecting shepherds in the dark in the middle of nowhere and announced the Savior’s birth. That’s what really matters!
