How's Your Self Esteem?
By Kristi Rice

Do you feel as if your self-esteem is down since you've become a young mother?  Many young moms experience this drop in the way they see themselves. After all, your entire life has just changed, and you are facing new challenges all the time.

But if you’re ever tempted to give in to the negative thoughts and doubts, rememebr this – children learn from experience. If you demonstrate low self-esteem, your son may see that as the way to act. If you avoid groups of people and don’t try to make friends, your daughter may shy away from classmates and fail to make friends.

With this in mind, let’s look at what low self-esteem looks like, and how you can overcome it.

Common signs of low self-esteem:
  • You analyze why you are the way you are.
  • You feel fear and stress when faced with adversity.
  • You don’t get along with parents or authority figures.
  • You want to sleep all the time.
  • You’re not willing to set goals, because you are afraid that maybe you won’t be able to achieve them.
  • You have trouble making friends, staying away from people and group situations.
  • You avoid looking into someone's eyes when you speak.
  • You talk to yourself negatively.
  • You may have trouble telling the truth.
  • You lack compassion or remorse.
It is possible to build your self-esteem, both in yourself and your child. Try focusing on things like this:
  • Be on time. This shows respect for others, who in turn will trust and depend on you.
  • Be neat. You don’t have to wear the trendiest clothes, but just knowing that you took the time to clean up and focus on the positives of your appearance will help your outlook.
  • Talk to yourself in a positive way.
  • Take responsibility for your actions. If you make a mistake, admit it. Apologize. And then move on.
  • Keep your conscience clean. Being proud of your actions will give you a new outlook on life.
  • Pray, Pray, Pray
And finally, remember that having good self-esteem is not about you having total control of your life.  That's God's job.
