Mom Makeover Tips
By Lindsey O’Connor

If the New Year has you thinking about a new you, you’re not alone. From an appearance pickme-up to an image overhaul, who couldn’t use a little help? Enter the professional image consultant.

Some people hire image consultants because they’re trying to land a new job or promotion and need help dressing for the job they want, not the one they have. Others seek image assistance after going through a major life change like a new baby, breast cancer surgery, or a divorce, and need help “reinventing” themselves.

For widely varying fees these experts will analyze your body, colors, and style type, help update your makeup, teach interviewing skills, develop your wardrobe, and even power shop for you.

Think working on your image is vain or egocentric? Experts say that our image affects how we think, feel, and behave and that people form an impression of us in a few seconds. Leah Oman, owner of The Smarter Image, said, “It’s not vain. It’s consideration. You are in charge of the messages you send, so take care to send the message you want to send: ‘I’m capable, credible. I care about myself, and I care about you.’” That’s good advice whether our message is communicated to work colleagues or our children.

As moms, it’s easy to let care-giving supersede self care. Start your image assessment by taking the “Quick Image Quiz.” Then read through the “Image Tips from the Pros” for some practical ideas.

TV host and image consultant Sunmee Choi said, “A lot of moms are devoted to their families but lose themselves in the process. Improving their appearance increases confidence and creates a healthier outlook on life because they respect themselves.”

Quick Image Quiz

Anna Wildermuth, president of the Association of Image Consultants
International, offers these clues that may indicate we need an
 image upgrade:

  1. How many years has it been since you changed your hairstyle?
  2. When was the last time you had a makeup makeover?
  3. Can you combine an ensemble with complete confidence?
  4. Do you know what colors look best on you?

Image Tips from the Pros
Here are some practical makeover tips to consider from several professional image consultants:

Dress appropriately every day. Take care of yourself whether you’re a professional in an office or a professional at-home mother.

Know your best colors. The wrong ones will make you look older and tired.

Understand your style. If you’re unsure, make a style file or collage from magazine pictures that you like.

Think clothing “clusters.” Add a few key pieces (five to eight) that go together in no more than three colors, such as one print, a couple of neutrals, and an accent color. Clusters mix and match multiplying your wardrobe. When you add up to 12 pieces you can get 50 different looks.

Upgrade casual clothes. Moms love casual clothes, so coordinate the colors for a sharper look. Make sure they are in the best condition. If you live in sweats, upgrade a notch when running errands.

Add a new accessory such as a purse, belt, or hoop earrings purchased from a thrift store.

Be as well groomed as possible, especially your hair and your nails.

To stay current, look at an occasional fashion magazine, shop online, or subscribe to clothing catalogs.

Consider what you own and what you need, then make a plan for your wardrobe and accessories.

Make time to shop when you need to and buy and wear things that you love.
