Focus on Photos
By Shelly Radic

Focus on birthday pictures before the celebration begins to ensure that the pictures are as fantastic as the party itself.

  • Focus on the photographer…and the videotographer. Avoid adding photography to your long list of party responsibilities. Enlist a friend or family member and provide specific instructions on equipment use and desired shots.
  • Focus on equipment. Check to make sure all cameras and accessories are functioning properly and in a central location, preferably beyond the reach of young guests.
    • Camera
    • Video Camera
    • Film
    • Memory card with space available
    • Battery (charged)
    • Battery charger
    • Flash
    • Special lenses
    • Tripod
  • Focus on location. Consider lighting sources, including windows and candles, obstacles in the party area like columns, plants, or walls, and seating arrangements. If possible, shoot some test shots, and then make adjustments to your equipment or arrangements as needed.
  • Focus on “must have" photos. Make a list of pictures to take before, during, and after the celebration. Share the list with your photographer. Consider the following list when creating your own.
    • Before
      • Cake, balloons, decorations before party starts
      • Decorating, making goodie bags, baking the cake
      • Close up of birthday child with cake, special decorations
      • Birthday child with family members
    • During
      • Birthday child blowing out candles
      • Group photo of guests with birthday child
      • Individual photos of guest with birthday child (great for thank yous)
      • Wrapped gifts
      • Birthday child with each unwrapped gift
      • Guests making crafts, playing games, interacting
    • After
      • Birthday child with party mess
      • Tired or sleeping birthday child
