Oxygen
Deep Breathing for the Soul
By Keri Wyatt Kent

Women – especially moms – often feel they are short on time, especially time for contemplation and spiritual growth. Oxygen is like taking a deep, relaxing breath for the soul. It gives busy women a way to grow spiritually even as they invest time and energy in those around them.

This weekly devotional from the author of Breathe focuses women on several classic spiritual disciplines, such as listing prayer, journaling, solitude and silence. Keri doesn’t water down these practices to make them easy for people with tight schedules. Rather she focuses on the basics that allow women who are craving more of God to experience a special connection with him regularly.

Week Four
Sending Out Rookies
Matthew 10:1-20

Day One: Being There
Read slowly through the passage. In this practice, remember, you are using your imagination to enter the story as a way of spending time with Jesus. Create a short video in your mind, watching the scene unfold. Put yourself into various roles in the scene. Take five or ten minutes to simply imagine the scene, to “daydream” about it. Add details — what smells and sounds surround the action described? Use your five senses as you put yourself into the story: What do you see, hear, feel, taste, smell?

This passage has a list of the twelve disciples. Pick one and imagine you are that person, being instructed by Jesus. How do you feel? Jesus is telling you to heal people and drive our demons — but not giving a lot of specific instructions on how to do that. Are you nervous, excited, fearful?

What do you notice about Jesus? What surprises you about him? What questions do you wish you could ask him? You may want to jot some observations or questions on your life card or in your journal. End you meditation by thanking Jesus for the opportunity to spend time with him.
