Call for Authors: Beauty, Health and Self

There are a couple items that seem to be true for moms: beauty regimens change when we have kids, and it becomes harder to take care of ourselves when we're taking care of everyone else. That's why we want to spend an entire month covering these topics.

Here are a few suggested topics. Feel free to write on one of these ideas or take some creative liberties.

Beauty

  • Tips for speeding up the getting-ready process
  • Ways to pamper yourself
  • Easy hair ideas
  • Best beauty products
  • Make-your own beauty products
  • How to repurpose old jewelry
  • Spicing up your wardrobe
  • Make-up tips to give the illusion of a full night's sleep
  • Tips to help your lipstick stay put

Recipes for healthy snacks

  • How to eat healthy when your diet mostly contains uneaten chicken nuggets off your kids abandoned lunch plates?
  • Favorite workout ideas for busy moms, incorporating exercises into household tasks
  • Healthy kid snacks
  • Ways to maintain mental sanity

Self

  • How do you find yourself in the midst of mothering?
  • Why is it important to take care of yourself?
  • How to know when you've given too much of yourself?
  • What is beauty?
  • How do you balance innate beauty with perceived beauty?
  • How do we teach our sons and daughters about beauty?

Submission Deadline: August 1, 2014

If you haven't tried Cover Girls Lip stay lipstick you owe it to yourself to do so... I apply one time in the morning then go. I love it I do find that I have to buy an extra gloss from time to time but over all it is the best I have ever found!!

I believe it is important to pause and step away for self-care. However, I feel we tend to resort to "self-induglences" vs. "self-care". I often have to think twice about what I am choosing when I feel I am deserving of a treat, which isn't always a healthy one or one I can afford.

Reply

Good point! We would like to focus on self care and not self indulgence. Thanks!

I echo another lady's comment desiring articles that help encourage contentment and peace about staying home with your kids - especially during their early years. I love to encourage women to enjoy and invest in the time while they are home with their kids.

Reply

Great thoughts, Jane!

I think we need to give ourselves permission to practice self-care, whatever it may look like for us. It took me years to accept this and now that I'm healthier, my whole outlook on life has changed!

Reply

Permission is the hard part, Laura. Thank you for mentioning that for the topics to be covered!

Reply

I would love an article about finding contentment and peace with the decision to stay home with your children. I feel so restless sometimes! The best beauty products are joy and contentment.

Reply

Great idea, thanks!

Reply

I want tips to stay healthy and active...!

Reply

Great tip, Jessalyn!

Reply

I would like more information on self. I struggled (and still sometimes do) for a long time about our decision for me to quit my full time job and become a stay at home Mom after our second child was born; I felt like I should contribute more financially to our family...

Reply

Thanks, Marisa. It is a tough decision.

It would be nice to get ideas about how to dress during the first few months after having a baby. My third child is 2 months old and I am currently in the phase where I refuse to wear maternity clothes because I am not pregnant and my pre pregnancy clothes do not fit. BUT I want to look cute! Help:)

Reply

Great idea for a much needed topic! Thanks!

Reply

Never knew how hard it would be to just do the basic essentials for self care let alone going out for a pedi/mani these days would be a HUGE event! Ha, ha! Would love to hear more about how to do quick and easy self care! Thank you!

Reply

Yes, the quick easy tips are much needed. Thanks!

I need encouragement to focus on healthy me-time, instead of what I've been settling for lately...LATELY is the operative word. I've been staying up too late in the evenings after the house is quiet. I tell myself that this is the only time I have to myself, but it's what I'm settling for and it's taking its toll. Tired momma syndrome...

Reply

It's always great to read about encouragement to take care of ourselves and to get some good ideas.

Reply

I'd like to read about organizing time and stuff, while finding time to read and spend time in prayer with a crazy life of 5 kids and husband! Time management seems to be a tough one for me. Lets not even mention how I have neglected myself, these days if I even get to have a shower its a good day.

Reply

Time management is a big one and I think most moms struggle with it.

Reply

Love this timely topic! I'm always looking for creative time management tips in order to have a bit of time for self-care. Thanks!

Reply

Time management and self care, much needed topics! Hopefully we can get some great ideas!

Reply

I am going to try this!

Reply

Great! Good luck!

Reply

I'd love to read about self the most. And I can't wait to start writing about this as well.

Reply

We are excited to see what you submit!

Reply

I would like to read about making a change from a life where I've neglected my self, my health, and my beauty routine. How do I get back to making time to work out and eat healthy?

Reply

That's a great article idea! Thanks for the idea.

Reply

Anything that is about taking care of myself QUICKLY! Sure, I'll take time for myself-the occasional brushing my hair, meal on the go, exercise, but any tips on making those times effective and quick is helpful!

Reply

Quick is the key word for sure! Thanks!

Reply

DIY pedicure and how to maintain it.

Reply

That's a great idea! Thanks for the topic suggestion!

Reply

Information about how to get my blood pressure down naturally, without over the counter medication.

Reply

Thanks, Heather. Great idea.

Reply

I really need help with speeding up the get ready process!

Reply

That is a great topic idea!

Taking care of myself is something I've been wanting to be better about. With 3 young kids, it's hard to make time for me a priority!

Reply

That is very true, Angela. Thank you!

Reply

I would love to hear others' ideas about exercising during a busy day. I have tried, seemingly, every method there is...and I have now settled on using nap time, which seems to work best for me.

Reply

Fitness is hard to fit into a routine. Great topic idea!

What are some ideas/activities/hobbies/fun stuff for a stay at home mom to maintain her sanity? I have a toddler who just learned how to unlock doors, and open baby locks to get into the cupboard for fluff to "paint" with (LOL gotta laugh or you will cry).... Us moms need SOMETHING to focus besides just the kids or it will consume our life and then we end up talking like toddlers ourselves (i.e. Do you know where the potty is here?). BTW I love my kids VERY much I am just with them consistently (even in the bathroom) and nothing is sacred and I don't remember what quiet time or me-time is anymore.... LOL

Reply

Holly, children are the best but I love your topic idea. We all need some self-care to be the best moms!

Reply

Healthy recipes!

Reply

Thanks, Angela!

I've recently become passionate about encouraging moms to add at least 5 minutes at the beginning and end of everyday to take care of you!! It's something I neglected to do for the past 9 years I have been a MOP!!

Reply

I like the idea of starting and ending your day that way!

Reply

Excited about this topic! I'd love to hear someone talk about the beauty that comes from living the life God intended you to live.

Reply

Thanks, Ida, great idea.

Lately my daughters are loving to munch on crunchy lettuce. Mix some salad and adding fruits to double the fun. The fruits can vary from apples, clementines, to cut up grapes. Healthy and easy. :)

Reply

AWESOME!!!! So excited that my daughter finally likes broccoli (They are now called little trees.) She will only eat it raw with dip or ranch but YAY! My other daughter will eat tomatoes like an apple-lol Have you tried celery(or "insert veggie here") with hummus? Very tasty!!!! Keep up the good work with the veggies/fruit!!!! <3

There are some really great recipes out there on Pinterest for making your own beauty/toiletry products. I make almost everything myself now and blog about it at www.home-hearted.com. If you don't have the supplies to make it yourself find a friend who is making stuff and ask her if you can buy some, it will be a 100% better for your body than what you can get at the store.

Reply

Thanks, Madalyn!

My daughter eats what I eat, and I eat what she eats. I try to always make good choices but I'd love some tips and recipes!

Reply

Tips and recipes are always great! I think we will get some good ones!

Reply

How do I encourage my daughter that God made her beautiful as she is while I'm fussing with my hair and makeup?

Reply

Great topic idea! I find it's hard to teach my daughter that God made her beautiful the way she is, but also taking care of yourself and good hygiene.

Reply

Love to read healthy recipes that give ways to "sneak" vegetables into casseroles and other dishes and ways to incorporate exercise with kids without going to the gym.

Reply

Great ideas, thank you! I like the idea of incorporating exercise with kids and no gym!

Reply

Some kind of quick beauty hacks would be fun. Maybe paired with easy fitness for a busy/tired mom and maybe some quick meals. I seem to gravitate to carbs when I'm hungry and short on time.

Reply

I like the idea of beauty hacks! Thanks for the ideas!
